Director's Statement
When I made Beyond Redemption: Space Captain, my vision was to create a story that can be appreciated on many levels by all ages. Being a long time fan of classic Sci-Fi from the 50s and 60s, I tried to draw on their style in the look and feel of the film, and to incorporate that magical sense of melodrama with a touch of humour and suspense.
Like my previous "Redemption" movies, Space Captain is set in a future world far from Earth where survival is less certain, the politics of Earth seem irrelevant and everyone has been too long in space. The people and their relationships are key to the story, and I have tried to create a group of likeable, eccentric characters who don't quite fit the typical stereotypes.
The plot revolves around Captain Lazlo, the washed up commander of the Spaceship Redemption. Lazlo has to deal with his coffee addiction and a young rebellious teenager, Alanah, while trying to save his ship and crew from a mind controlling parasite infestation, an old alien adversary, and an odd female cyborg who is discovered after a nearby craft is mysteriously destroyed. While Lazlo does his best to make sense of it all, isolated crew members each have their own issues to solve as their lives begin to unravel and hard choices have to be made. As the story progresses, the crew become more like one big dysfunctional family as they try to face a common threat.
Beyond Redemption: Space Captain is a classic, light-hearted, Sci-Fi feature with a twist, about one weary man trying to survive and his young teenage sidekick trying to make sense of it all.

DR. PAUL DAY (CAPTAIN LAZLO, Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Composer, Cinematographer)
Born and raised in Brisbane, Dr. Paul Day always had a fascination with film making from an early age. In 2000 he set up his own audio and video production studio, Angel Studios, which gave him the resources to write, produce, and direct independent Sci-Fi feature films. The first of these, Redemption 101 (2007) a tongue-in-cheek Sci-Fi feature, revolved around the character Captain Lazlo and his quirky crew aboard the starship Redemption. It has gradually gained popularity as an underground cult classic. His next release, Beyond Redemption (The Visitor), a standalone prequel to the first film, premiered at the Gold Coast Film Festival in Queensland, Australia in 2012, and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the ASEAN International Film Festival in 2013. His latest movie, Beyond Redemption: Space Captain continues the theme of Sci-Fi/Horror/Comedy, and takes Lazlo on another adventure. Paul won Best Director in the 2013 ASIN (Australian Screen Industry Network) awards for Space Captain, which premiered in August 2014 at Hoyts Cinema, Sunnybank Queensland. Australia.
Like most self-funded filmmakers Paul takes on many roles in his films. While the budgets may be restricted, the cast and crew put their heart and soul into each production, making up for any shortfalls with sheer enthusiasm. Paul's is passionate about making movies with an entertaining story with engaging characters.
Through Angel Studios, Paul is looking to encourage and develop new talent with regular training workshops, and is always looking for ways to provide opportunities for new and emerging actors.
